Welcome to Animal Magic Art.  My name is Sue Mclachlan and I am a trained artist based in Hampshire, specialising in animal and pet portraits. I graduated with an MA in Fine Art from the Winchester School of Art in 2008.  In 2010 I set up my pet portrait business ‘Animal Magic Art’ confident that my love of animals shows through in my work. (I have a horses and a dog and until recently a cat too).

My pet portraits can be in the traditional mediums of watercolour or oil, or I offer the iPet Portrait, a more versatile pet portrait, drawn on an iPad.  This can be printed onto all sorts of surfaces, canvas for framing, slate or even a tea-towel!

To produce a good quality animal or pet portrait, I work mainly on commissions.  I pride myself on gaining an exact likeness, even when it’s not possible to meet the animal myself, by using photographs either taken by me or the owner’s photos if they are good enough quality.  Good photos are essential, not only for quality and resolution to obtain likeness and detail, but also to capture the essence and character of the pet. Listening to feedback from a client during the process of drawing and painting really helps, too. 

These stunning pet portraits bring a cherished pet alive on paper by focusing on the animal, excluding background, emphasising character.  Keeping this upper-most on my agenda, as much as being an artist, I recognise my highly detailed paintings are not just something you hang on the wall, they are a reminder of a cherished friend that will be valued for years to come.
