Welcome to Animal Magic Art. My name is Sue Mclachlan and I am an pet portrait artist in Hampshire. I graduated with an MA Fine Art from Winchester School of Art in 2008 and in 2010 I set up my Pet Portrait business Animal Magic Art confident that my love of animals shows through in my work. I have a horses and a dog and until recently a cat too.
My pet portraits can be in the traditional mediums of watercolour or oil or I offer the iPet Portrait, a more versitile pet portrait, drawn with my finger on an ipad. This pet portrait can be printed onto all sorts of surfaces.
To produce a good quality animal or pet portait, I work mainly on commissions as pride myself on gaining an exact likenes by using photographs either taken myself or from the owner’s photos if they are good enough quality. Good photos are essential for an animal and pet portait, not only for quality and resolution to obtain likeness and detail, but also to capture the essence and character of the pet which mostly the owner does acquire with their own photos.
These stunning pet portraits bring a cherished pet alive on paper by focusing on the animal, excluding background, emphasising character even though I don’t always meet the pet. Not always being able to meet the pet an animal and pet portait artist’s key talent is to be able to capture the likeness which I pride myself on being able to obtian by not only detailed observation, time and working from a photo for reality, but listening to the client during the process of drawing and painting having given the client updates. From photo shoot through updates of likeness to framing my proffessionality values the client. Keeping this upmost on my agenda as much as being an artist too I recognise my highly detailed paintings are not just something you hang on the wall, they are a reminder of a cherished friend that will be valued for years to come.

Emotional collection
My client picked this up this week. So emotional, it was the best response. A lost best friend, too early too so very sad but such a lovely thing to do for a very lovely returning client.
Inspiration for some different sort of painting
Still loving and learning. Online classes and live workshops I attend regularly to keep me challenged and try to get to grips with colour and brush strokes. Jamel Akib introduces us to artists with different styles. Recently I've painted these using my own photos,...
